Bookkeeping Is Just the Beginning: What “Advisory” Really Means at Tally Services

"Bookkeeping firm" undersells a lot of what we actually do. It's an accurate description of where the relationship starts with almost every client, but for most of them, it's a small part of where it ends up. The bigger, and honestly more interesting, part of our work is advisory — sometimes called Client Advisory Services, or CAS — and it's worth explaining what that actually looks like in practice.

It starts with the numbers, but it doesn't stop there.

Accurate books are the raw material. Advisory work is what we do with them: helping an owner or a board understand what the numbers mean, what's changing, and what decision they point toward. That's a fundamentally different conversation than "are these transactions categorized correctly."

Some of what this looks like for our clients:

Preparing financial updates and talking points for leadership or board meetings, not just handing over a report. Working through pricing strategy when a client's cost structure or market has shifted. Advising on the financial side of a program or client relationship winding down ~ final invoices, close-out reporting, and what it means for the rest of the business. Helping a nonprofit board understand a grant budget or a funding gap in plain language, not accounting jargon. Reconciling and advising on owner or employee benefit contributions so a business stays compliant and the numbers tie out cleanly.

Why this matters more than it used to.

Compliance work — taxes, payroll, reconciled books — used to be the whole relationship between a business and its accounting firm. Increasingly, it's the entry point. The businesses that get the most value from a firm like ours are the ones who loop us into decisions before they're made, not just report on them after.

This is the direction we've been building toward.

A lot of our clients already work with us this way and may not think of it as a separate service ~ it's just become part of how we work together. We wanted to name it directly: if you've thought of Tally Services as "the bookkeeping company," there's a broader advisory relationship available whenever you're ready to use it.
